If you're using KDE, use Alt+F1, which replicates the Win key & opens the K menu.
Here's a longer process that you can use in KDE, if you have a Win key & want to just press it to open the K menu:
-
K menu > Control Center.
-
Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard Layout > Xkb Options
-
Check the boxes next to "Enable xkb options", "Third Level Choosers"& "Press any of the Winkeys to choose 3rd level"
-
Press Apply.
-
Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard Shortcuts > Global Shortcuts
-
Scroll down to Panel > Popup Launch Menu
-
Choose Custom & then press the Win key. When you do, it may be labeled ISO_Level3_Shift, but who cares?
-
Press Apply & close the Control Center.
Jeeminy! That's long, but it works!
(Check out all of my posts on KDE.)

1. The Alt+F1 also works under Gnome. And if you want to use the win key to pop open the menu:
1. Go to Panel menu -> Preferences and then click on Keyboard Shortcuts
2. Scroll down a bit and you will see, "Show the Panel Menu". The default is Alt+F1.
3. Click on it and then hit the win key.
4. Voila, Hitting the win key now will pop open the menu.
Cheers!
