History of Fedora Core
I'm not really much of a Fedora fan - my tastes run more towards Debian - but a lot of people really love that
distro. If you want to find out more about the various flavors of Fedora Core, definitely check out "The evolution of Fedora Core Linux", which is just that: an
overview of the 5 versions of FC we've seen, along with screenshots and more. It's pretty cool, and even I - a
non-Fedora user - found it very interesting, if nothing else than from a historical perspective. I love stuff like
this. Anyone know of any others?

Notes on installing Fedora Core 3
My buddy Robert, who I help to run the CWE-LUG with, is really good about
posting instructions on the CWE-LUG wiki whenever he does something new. I just found that he posted some
"Notes on Installing [Fedora Core 3] on a machine with a
NIC on a LAN with DHCP", which some of you may find helpful. And since it's a wiki, if there's anything you can
add, please do so. I mean, my gosh - it's a wiki! ...

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
RH just announced the new release of RH Enterprise Linux version 4, its latest in the line of business-oriented
Linux. You too can read the press release
and check out the product page.
NewsForge has a review of RHEL4 up: "Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 4: An overview". Jem, the reviewer, isn't really enthusiastic about this release: "little left to
be excited about … utterly useless … fared poorly with our standard test machines … a mediocre improvement". The
comments below the review take issue with Jem's views, so read them for an opposite POV.
SearchEnterpriseLinux has a
pretty in-depth
3 page review of the new release. He finds a couple of weird issues - RH claims that OpenOffice.org is installed,
but it's not, for instance - and in the end, he says it's a good release, but " What's disappointing about RHEL 4 is
that I don't see anything particularly ...

Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and even CentOS (more on that one later!). For now, let's take a looksee at FC3.
My Workstation OS: Fedora Core 3
A short review (actually, more straight praise than review) by a young man who really likes FC: "Everything
works, and there's nothing more that I could ask for." Goodness!
(Nope, not a lot out there right now on FC3. Ah well. There'll be a lot more throughout the rest of the day.)

A (way) better APT for Fedora Core
So I'm reading this review of Fedora Core 3 last
night, when I notice that Dag Wieers, the main dude behind the best Fedora Core APT repository, has
responded to the review in the comments. I
noticed in particular this bit o' info in the last para of his comment that I think bears pointing to:
Something the article could have mentioned is the new Smart Package Manager that is the first tool that allows to
use _all_ repositories in a very smart way. It avoids conflicts, allows users to control what package they want for
what distribution and in fact gives the user control. It does not force the user to choose one over another, it
allows users to pick what they need. You can find the Smart Package Manager RPM package for FC3 at:
http://dag.wieers.com/packages/smart/ and it comes pre-configured
with 13 (!) repositories, even with fedora.us and livna.org, although fedora.us is not yet active. Smart has been
designed from the bottom up by Gustavo Niemeyer, the same person that ported apt to ...
Free alternatives to Red Hat
As most of you reading this know, Red Hat now costs money. Oh sure, you can use Fedora Core, but that's not really
Red Hat. In typical open source fashion, others have sprung up with free clones of Red Hat's OS. So, if you love Red
Hat but don't love paying for it, give one of these alternatives a try:
CentOS Linux
Tao Linux
Scientific Linux
White Box Enterprise Linux
Anyone know any others that are explicitly clones of Red Hat? Leave 'em in the comments below!
