Podcasting for open source folks

On the CWELUG mailing list, Robert asks for someone to explain podcasting. So I jump in with this message, which I hope you find useful. <begin my message> The following assumes you know what RSS is. If you don't, read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_29. 1. Get an RSS feedreader that supports enclosures (the mp3 files that are the basis for the podcasts). One that runs on your client machine will hopefully download enclosures; one that is web-based, like Bloglines, will provide a link to the enclosure that you can download. or, you can get a specific podcast client tool that only works with RSS feeds that contain enclosures, like these fine open source tools: a. Windows: ipodder b. Linux: bashpodder c. Mac OS X: ipodder You can find a list of podcast clients at http://www.ipodder.org/directory/4/ipodderSoftware. 2. subscribe to RSS feeds that contain podcasts/enclosures (later today I'll provide a list of podcast feeds I'm subscribed to). 3. Once ...

My favorite podcasts

Earlier today I explained how to listen to podcasts with open source tools. Some folks have been wondering what podcasts I like to listen to, so here's my list - the links are to the direct podcast feed that you want to subscribe to, if you want to check 'em out yourself. And by the way - I use a modified bashpodder on my Linux box to grab these puppies. It's great software! And so simple! All In The Mind @ Radio National (Australian science show about the brian & mind) APN Bluegrass Express APN Classic Country (I think this & the previous one are dead, which is a shame) Ebert & Roeper (Gotta know what flix to see!) Future Tense (a 5-minute-long tech & science show from American Public Radio - awesome!) IT Conversations (You MUST get this! MUST! If you like technology, this is an ABSOLUTE MUST! For more info, see the main web site.) KCRW Film Reviews (Short & sweet movie reviews, ...

Juice, an open source podcast grabber

My buddy Rich asked me about ripping CDs the other day, which I answered, & then he followed up with a question about how to grab podcasts on Windows. Here's what I told him. OK, download a program called Juice, which is open source, free, & works great: http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net Click on Windows. On the following pg, find a location close to you & then click Download on the right. The download should begin. Install Juice on your machine. During the install, I would go ahead and check Add to Startup Group so the program auto starts when you start Windows. Run Juice. Oon the Subscriptions tab, press the green button to add a subscription. Yu need the URL of the podcast. KWMU's list of podcasts, for instance, is at http://kwmu.org/Programs/podcasts.html. See the orange POD buttons? Right-click on one that interests you, Choose Copy Link Location, & then paste that URL into Subscriptions in Juice. You also need to schedule when Juice grabs your podcasts. On the Subscriptions ...

DTV: Open source video casting viewer

Scott has recently been posting about podcasts and podcasting. Well, it's going to go one stage further as video casting becomes the next talked about technology. DTV is an interesting OS X application which lets viewers subscribe to video channels, much like you can subscribe to podcasts. DTV is being ported to Windows right now, and the source is available for anyone who wants to take a look. If you're doing any development on the Mac, the code might be worth a look, as DTV has a very slick interface. (Check out all of our posts on video.) ...

iPodder changes name to Juice

Well, no surprise here: Apple bitched that the "iPodder" name, used by open source software that grabs podcasts for you on Mac, Windows, & Linux, was confusing people who might think that it was supported directly by Apple, so they've had to change the name. The new name: Juice. The new web site: http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/. Of course, the Linux guys, being Linux guys, went their own way slightly with their name, which is CastPodder, & which is located at http://borgforge.net/projects/castpodder/. Me, I still prefer bashpodder, a simple bash shell script, & my good buddy Ed Howland (with some aid from Robert Citek) has been coding his own version in Ruby that will see the light of day on this blog very, very soon. In the meantime, if you're looking to listen to some podcasts, check out Juice or CastPodder. They're good stuff. (Check out all of our posts on podcasting or bashpodder.) ...

New features in Amarok 1.4

What's new in Amarok 1.4? Oh baby! Amarok is the best - & I mean the best - music jukebox on Linux (too bad it doesn't run on Windows or Mac OS). It's already killer, but some new goodies are coming, like support for metadata in other file formats, support for scriptable lyrics, podcast support, statistics, & lots more. Can't wait! (Check out all of our posts on Amarok.) ...

Will the IBM-Lenovo deal hurt Linux on ThinkPads?

I use a ThinkPad for my laptop, & I love it. It runs Linux like a champ, the keyboard is second to none, & it's just a damn well-put-together machine. When it was time for the wife to get a laptop, I got her a ThinkPad too, & she loves it. It also runs Linux - SUSE 9.2, and perfectly, I might add. IBM is good to Linux, in terms of $$$ & programming support, & lately by helping us out with patents. We appreciate IBM's help, & that's one of the reasons I support them by buying their equipment. The fact that it's the best out there hardware-wise is even better. When the IBM-Lenovo deal was announced, I wasn't that upset. I figured that Lenovo would realize that they had to keep the quality up on the ThinkPads, or they would lose customers in droves. They seem like a smart company, so I wasn't worried. And heck, most of our hardware is made in China & Asia already, so that's not a biggie. That's why I was pretty concerned when I listened to an interview with Peter ...
