Review of SUSE 10.1

When it comes to RPM-based distros, the best - easily - is SUSE. 10.1 is now out, & the reviews are starting to appear, and they are uniformly positive. Here's a lengthy look at SUSE, including quite a bit about the ultra-cool XGL extensions that are the best damn eye candy I've ever seen on any platform. Interested? Then go read Mad Penguin's "First Look at SUSE Linux 10.1". You'll find it interesting ... I guarantee. (Check out all of our posts on SUSE.) ...

Make SUSE 10.1 even cooler

The new SUSE 10.1 is getting great reviews, & is undoubtedly the best SUSE yet. However, even something that is great can always be made better, & that's where Jem Matzan's "Hacking SUSE Linux 10.1" comes in. Want to know how to add support for Java, Flash, Acrobat, Windows Media, RealPlayer, ATI & nVidia graphics cards, XGL/Compiz (only the coolest eye candy EVER), & commercial DVD movies? Then go read that article & follow its advice! (Check out all of our posts on SUSE.) ...

SUSE 10 released

Novell recently opened up SUSE to community development as OpenSUSE, & now we see the results: SUSE 10. Read the release announcement. Download the software directly or via BitTorrent. Feel the SUSE love. My buddy Matt in Germany (hey, Matt!) just installed SUSE 10, & here's his report: Here is my report on the installation of SuSE 10. The installation itself went somewhat smoothly. I actually had to initially install twice as I received a GRUB error after the basic installation (the first disk) was complete. The second attempt worked. I have spent most of the day trying to get a wireless connection. I have yet to get my internal wireless card to work. I even had trouble getting the trusty Orinoco Gold card to work. I eventually figured it out, but the signal strength for this card is weak, just as it was when I used it running Linux on my old Dell. I think there is a problem with the card under Linux as the card has great strength under Windows. Does anyone ...

SUSE review day: #1

It's SUSE review day on the Open Source Weblog, & this is review #1. One of the slickest distros out there, the latest developments in SUSE shows that Novell appears to "get it" when it comes to Linux & open source. And quote-unquote normal people can use it too. For instanct, my wife, the non-techie lawyer, uses SUSE, & quite likes it, thank ye very much. Now, on to the reviews! SUSE LINUX 9.3 Professional Review Now, granted, this is from Novell itself, but still … it's got lots of pretty screenshots! And it does have some good overviews of new features. So consider this one like eating your candy before you eat your dinner, 'k? "Almost all of the packages that come with SUSE 9.3 are new versions. As a matter of fact, when I first fired up KDE 3.4, I must say, it was exhilarating. What a beautiful sight." (Check out all of my posts on SUSE.) ...

SUSE review day: #5

It's SUSE review day on the Open Source Weblog, & this is review #5. Five. Five paragraph essays, 5 o'clock shadow, Hawaii Five-O. Five. Review: SUSE Professional 9.3 The always-interesting NewsForge looks at SUSE 9.3. They like it, but they're not afraid to detail the problem areas, especially Beagle (just like Vaughan-Nichols did) & the lack of the Java Media Framework. But overall, he thinks this is a good distro. "I found this latest version, released in March, to be an excellent implementation of the Linux operating system. It brings Linux's levels of ease of use and configurability to an all-time high." (Check out all of my posts on SUSE & Beagle.) ...

SUSE review day: #2

It's SUSE review day on the Open Source Weblog, & this is review #2. Two. Two peas in a pod, two of a kind, The Two Towers, Half-Life 2. Two. SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 Ah, now we're getting into the real meat & potatos. My fave tech rag eWeek takes a long, comprehensive look at SUSE 9.3, & boy howdy, do they like what they find. In particular, Usability & Management both get ratings of EXCELLENT, which is cool … & deserved. Jason Brooks, the author of this piece, knows his Linux & open source, & it shows. Definitely one to read. "Novell's SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 is a solid, comprehensive Linux distribution that provides access to the latest technologies the open-source software world has to offer—with a level of polish that's superior to most other general-purpose distributions." (Check out all of my posts on SUSE.) ...

SUSE review day: #6

It's SUSE review day on the Open Source Weblog, & this is review #6. Six. Six Flags, Six Sigma, Six Degrees of Separation. Six. SUSE 9.2 vs. 9.3: A 64-Bit Comparison This guy at LinuxPlanet has a 64-bit AMD Athlon 64 notebook, & he wants to know which is better: 9.2 or 9.3. There are a few problems with his hardware (video drivers, natch), but he gets those resolved. Sound's a PITA too, but that's taken care of. Lots of stuff has been fixed to work better in 9.3, which is always a plus. On the whole, this is a great look at these 2 distro versions, from a 64-bit perspective. "I'd say that if you want a very stable version of Linux on a 64-bit notebook, like my HP 5460, you might want to stick with SUSE 9.2. ... Otherwise, SUSE 9.3 would save you some time, if you want the latest version of OpenOffice.org, The Gimp, and other normal Linux applications." (Check out all of my posts on SUSE.) ...

SUSE review day: #3

It's SUSE review day on the Open Source Weblog, & this is review #3. Three. Three Kings, Three Stooges, Three Dog Night. Three. SUSE 9.3: More, Better, Faster, Now! LinuxPlanet's review focuses on the software installed, with a nice table giving version numbers, always useful info. There are also a few gotchas gone over - thank you very much - and a look at installation. Worth reading. "With Novell's support and financial encouragement, it should continue to be an excellent choice for a wide variety of users. I'm extremely happy with it and use it on both my laptop and home server system." (Check out all of my posts on SUSE.) ...

SUSE review day: #4

It's SUSE review day on the Open Source Weblog, & this is review #4. Four. Four Seasons, The Fantastic Four, Four Humors. Four. Bleeding-Edge Linux Desktop: SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 The always-acerbic Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols at eWeek takes a long 4-page look at the new SUSE, & he likes it! He likes it! However, he does have a pretty big caveat: this isn't, IHHO, a distro for casual, untrained users. No, he thinks this one is for folks who already know how to use Linux, & just want to push things to the absolute limit. That's his opinion. I've installed SUSE on several non-techies' computers, & they were happy. It's all in the support, of course. They have me. *heh* He also gives some darn useful advice about running Beagle, the desktop search tool, & while it's a PITA to get going, when it works, it rocks. Cool. "This is one impressive desktop distribution. It has every Linux application that anyone is ever likely to want ...

SUSE (and Novell) news and reviews

There's a lot goin' on in Novell-land lately, about many of the distros that the company oversees. SUSE 9.1 Yeah, it's old now - 9.2 has been out for a while - but you still might find a lot of interesting instructions in "Newbie guide for the net install (ftp install) of SuSe 9.1". Crouse, the author, points out that while there is an official set of instructions for the FTP install, they're not exactly totally complete, and that's what he intends to correct. SUSE 9.2 Pocket-lint, a UK site, makes available a "Linux Suse 9.2 Professional Review" that finds a few problems with the distro, but on the whole finds it a worthy upgrade, especially for more experienced users. Wanna try out SUSE 9.2? Well, remember, Novell has now made it available for free! Don't forget that you can download the whole furshlugginer thing ... but if ya like it, buy it, OK? Novell Linux Desktop 9 OSNews provides a review of NLD that is very positive, praising its "Cohesion and consistency and ...

Adding the good stuff to a default SUSE install

So, if you want to enjoy all that cool stuff that SUSE can't just include due to crazy licenses and stupid laws, you need to read Hacking OpenSUSE & follow the instructions contained within. Consider it absolutely essential reading if you're using SUSE. (Check out all of my posts on SUSE.) ...

HUGE NEWS: SUSE becoming a public project

A few years ago, Red Hat spun off Red Hat Professional into Fedora Core, a public project overseen by Red Hat. This, needless to say, has worked out well. Now SUSE is doing the same thing. Now Computerworld is reporting, in a rather redundant headline (it's already open source; it's the process that's opening up), that "Novell to make SUSE Linux open-source". New name: SUSE Linux. New web site: http://www.opensuse.org. New model: all of the code is available to everyone to work on. New upcoming release: SUSE Linux 10.0, sometime in the future (with the beta coming out at the next LinuxWorld). This is really huge, great news, & I for one welcome our new SUSE Linux overlords. (Check out all of my posts on SUSE.) ...
